Isn't the RXV590 an AV receiver? Why not run the cable box and VCR to
the receiver and output to the television from the receiver? With your
cable split you will still be able to record independently on the VCR.
Seems to be a more flexible option.

By the way that "Cable Out" you refer to is almost certainly the SciAtl
Digital Coax out that you can hook to a digital ready receiver. This
will allow you to watch 5.1 source programs.

Apologies if I've got the receiver capability wrong.

Hmmm, don't know, it depends on whether you're able to switch between
video modes. Does your tv have video1/video2 or just a generic video?
Can't hurt to test it. If there is only one video selection, then I
would assume that SVideo would supersede the composite (yellow) input.

VCR outputs to VCR1 inputs. VCR inputs either from receiver's VCR1
outputs or from the cable box. You should have a way to output from the
cable box both to the VCR and the receiver. My SciAtl box came with
cables to do exactly that. And of course, cable box needs to output to
the VCR2 inputs on the receiver. You DO want to use the S-Video
connection, so you'll need to workaround for that. I eventually bought a
VCR with S-Video output (and input) just to get around this whole
problem.
