View Full Version : How to replace two smaller drives in Series2 with single drive?

I have a series 2 Tivo that came with a 40 GB drive to which I added a
second, 120GB drive as soon as I received the unit. After a few years
of use, at least one of those drives appears to be crashing. Im
thinking about replacing both drives with a single, 300GB drive. How
hard would it be to go from two drives to a single drive? Should I
prepare the drive as per normal, then copy everything from the primary
drive (the 40GB one) to the new 300GB drive? I have already copied the
recorded programs want to keep from the TiVo to a PC, and I wouldn't
mind going through the "What To Record" bit again, so I don't really
have to keep my recorded programs and settings - although I would
prefer to keep those.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

P.S. I have the latest version of the TiVo software, whatever that is
(7.2?).

P.P.S. I have a USB 2.0 to Ethernet adapter in the TiVo, which
transfers shows to my PC at about 8 Mbps. Since this is USB 2.0, I
don;t think the bottleneck is at the USB end; it must be within the
TiVo software itself. Any chance of installing a NIC in the TiVo unit
(or aklternatively, hacking the software) to make transfers run at
something closer to 100Mbps?

Just follow the same instructions/directions you originally followed when
you added the 120GB drive. That same thing (Hinsdale FAQ) tells you how
to do what you want to do.

If you have a hackable box, certainly. What TiVo model do you have?

Thanks for the quick response. I have the 240040.

Just run mfsbackup with the names of the two existing disks and
pipe that into mfsrestore going to the new disk.

Yes, that should be a hackable model.
