View Full Version : HDTV on a boat

Any thoughts on HDTV while cruising America's Great Loop (down the
Mississippi, around Florida, to Bahamas, back up East Coast to Great
Lakes? I've been told there are 9 channels currently available; expect
30 by the end of the year. I'm questioning what makes sense as far as
investment in the technology - and what we can realistically expect to
receive in the next year or two.

9 HD channels available on what? Satellite? Over the Air local
stations? If Dish can be made to work on a boat, it has more than 9 HD
channels available. DirecTV will be adding more this year. If you put a
UHF/upper-VHF antenna on the boat, while you are in the US you should be
able to get a number of HD stations near the major cities.
I think you need to provide more info before anyone can answer your
questions.

If I had a boat and was going to make that journey, the last thing I would
be interested in would be watching television.

A boat! It moves. In the US we have decided that we do not want things
that move to be able to receive digital TV.
Unless on your cell phone of course.
The US went way out of its way to make sure that mobile and portable
didn't work with digital TV by picking the worst modulation in the
world, 8-VSB.
Of course with satellite and a tracking antenna all will be fine. Just
pay the man. In the US we don't want a viable free OTA DTV system, so
passe. We like to pay big bucks for our TV.

The Gyros will keep it on track while underway most of the time.
