I think you missed my point. I'd prefer to hook the subwoofer to my front
channel amp that way I could use it with 2 channel sound as well. I'm not
running stereo sources through my 5.1 decoder, my itunes and fm go straigh
to my main amp amp (which is also the front channels from my 5.1 decoder).
But what I'm not sure of is the 5.1 audio include a specifically coded
subwoofer output, or does it simply send the lows to the sub out? If all it
does is send the lows to the sub out then I can add the subwoofer to my 2
channel stereo. Otherwise I have to figure out how to move the sub back and
forth between my 5.1 decoder and my stereo. I want to be able to use the
sub with stereo input as well as 5.1.

The 5.1 does include a specially coded ".1" channel that the recording
studio mixes the LFE (and deep bass too, I believe). A receiver (and
most likely, your decoder) will decode and send the LFE and bass
(based upon the subwoofer cutoff set by you) to the subwoofer channel.
Now some receiver have settings for the speakers, allowing you to
designate them as "Small" or "Large". When the fronts are set to
"Large", they will send this subwoofer output also to the fronts. What
you could do is hook up the fronts (or mains) output to your front
channel amp. This means that the fronts will try to reproduce the lows
too, but if they're big enough, or if they have the filters to rejects
the lows, then it will give you the desired effect (In any event, since
your subwoofer is hooked up to the front amp, you already have this
issue).
