View Full Version : KCET LA now 720p ?
G-squared

I noticed this at work a couple of days ago. 28-1 used to be HD
content nearly all the time and an HD simulcast of 28-2 SD 480i
running the regular SD programming, same as 28 NTSC. The last few days
28-2 is black, 28-1 goes HD or SD up-rezzed to HD as needed. I just
now found it to be 720p rather than what it had been, 1080i. Anybody
know anything about this ?

I saw this in the AVS forum regarding KCET's digital programming
changes, but it says nothing about their switch from 1080i to 720p:

Thanks for posting this. I was wondering what had happened, too. It looks
like we'll have to wait until August and see what they really do. For now,
it's KOCE, for me.

KOCE is a vast wasteland of marginal programming.

Most broadcasters will upgrade to 720P eventually.

That's true of most PBS programming, but when you watch
it in HD it is a better wasteland.
Marginal programming seems to attract viewers. Most KOCE
viewers are not watching the HD channels.

It would help if their program listing were availble someplace besides
their website. Titan TV lists 50-1 as "travel, gardening and
documentaries". YahooTV even less.

Or maybe even 1080p in some cases.

How's your data casting business going, bob? I wonder why your website
is still content free. Is there any reason for that, bob?

Someday but not with 6 MHz, 8-VSB and MPEG2.
They who waited will have decent codecs and modulations and will be able
to have 1080P. Like the Chinese and French.

I really don't know why you persist in spreading this lie, but you do.
1080p is part of the ATSC standard and will fit quite well in a 6MHz
channel with 8-VSB and MPEG-2. It may actually take less bandwidth than
1080i.

And those who didn't wait, like the US and Canada.
I already have a 1080p display at home and will soon have a 1080p source.

I guess bob disparages hi-rez because his flakey, mickey-mouse broadcasting
schemes can't handle it.
I guess.

Do I presume correctly that 1080P source will be either a high-end
Toshiba HD-DVD or Blueray player? (most Toshiba HD-DVD players do 1080i)

Yeppers. HD-XA2, waiting for the firmware upgrade.
It looks damned good on a 65HM167, too

Pay no attention to Sam. I think KOCE is great. Not only to they have
a better picture - but usually better programming.
I check in on KCET when they do their Saturday Night Films, and Once
Upon a Time in America looked great this weekend in full resolution
wide-screen on my 16x9, BUT, they ran the program 20 minutes over the
scheduled time-block, so PVR cut-off well before the end. I think I'm
completely done with KCET now.
