Greetings to the group!! I just recently come across a Media-Device,
that I think is gonna replace my TiVo Series 2. Cost me $109.00, plus
$119.00 for a 1.5TBHard drive. It's "very" nice, lets you record in
real-time, or use a timer, it even has a "pause live TV" feature! I
put ALL my Pic's, MP3s and Videos on the drive, and I use it to Record
directly from my Dual Tuner DirectTV-TiVo so I can save space, and It
even connects across the network! I recorded some ep's of the RedBull
air races, then I transferred them from my 'Box' directly to Grandpa's
PC. I was even able to rename the files too! This thing is AWSOME for
me, because it does sooo much more than just 'view' stuff. I also use
it as a portable Storage-Drive for PC's. A nice feature also is that
it has 5-different video recording-quality settings, it saves the
videos as .MPG(2) so I can use VideoReDoPlus if I want to edit the
commercials out and stuff. Below is a link, and some info... with a
cable-box, and one of these Media-Devices, you could indeed replace a
Series 2, the only draw-back is that it cannot change channels, like a
Series 2 can. No special software is required to connect to a PC,
either via LAN or USB, so you can transfer files freely without
loading more programs on your PC. You can also connect it directly to
your TV, even if it's HDMI.
The Device is small enough to be easily moved from one location
to another, and has a 'stand' so it won't tip over. Comes with a
remote that has oodles of features too! I could go on-and-on about
this thing, (grin).
I 'did' have to do a firmware update, to get the subtitled-lyrics to
appear in my music videos. It also would play most of my MP4 vids
afterwards too. (you copy the firmware files onto a USB-Jump drive,
and follow the instructions on the web site).
Anyway, if you don't wanna pay a monthly fee, this might be worth
considering.
