Can my JVC AV-32D-302 32" set be used to watch digital cable with the cable
company's converter or do I have to a buy an HD ready set?

you can watch digital cable -- but not in HD

to watch HD (or any of the HD-only channels) you need an HD cable box (not
just a digital cable box)
and an HD capable monitor if you want to watch in full HD (1080/720)

this assumes you HAVE HD on your cable system
