View Full Version : Hooking up new SUB

I just got a JBL 150 watt PB10 Sub and I need a few tips on hooking it
up to my receiver. Seems to me that there are 2 different ways of
doing this:
1 - plug it in the LFE Subwoofer Pre Out
2 - hook up the front, center, and surround speakers to the sub and
the sub to the receiver.
The satellite speakers on my system are small 2 way bookshelf
speakers. That's why I was thinking that if I hook up the speakers
through the new sub, the sub would output the bass the speakers can't.
The system already has a sub that it came with (not powered).
My question is, if I plug it in using the Pre Out, will my new sub
output bass while playing CD's, or will it only work as the .1 in 5.1
DVD's?

If your receiver is set to route all bass (usually somewhere from
100 - 80 Hz on down) to its LFE/sub output, then it should work with
any source.

if the JBL is a powered sub, has its own amp, hook the sub to the sub out
put on the back of the receiver.....switch your receiver to speaker
selection that addresses small or large speaker hook up....select small for
back surrounds and let the receiver automatically route the bass to the
sub....this can be done also for front and center speakers....the only
reason you would hook any speakers to sub is if your didnt have a Sub Preout
and had to power the sub with signals from the speakers.....the

yeah, I guess that's the way to go, although... I have a DVD-Audio
capable DVD player, and I own a few DVD-A's. I always end up listening
to the DD 5.1 tracks since I don't have full range speakers (also no
bass managment on my old receiver), and therefore the bass gets lost
while playing the high resoulution audio tracks. I was thinking that
if I hooked up each speaker through the sub then the sub would be able
to do the bass management... would this work?
