Perhaps a failing hard drive. As you bought it used, that's a distinct
possibility, particularly if you bought it from some unknown vs. a
friend or relative, etc.

I have the same sound vanishing problem. It will just disapear for a few
seconds, and then come back. All the while the video is fine. Weird, I
dont know what is causing it. I thought about a bad hard drive, however its
just happening with the sound, and never the video.
