I keep seeing messages here where folks are talking about Phillips, etc...
mine just says TiVo Series 2 - even on the back, I don't see any
manufacturer's name. Am I just blind, or what?

Don't forget about the short lived AT&T branded Series 2's (Now Comcast)...
they had the ones WITH buttons on the front, and the ones without that look
exactly like TiVo branded series 2's...
