To each their own I guess. I find 2 tuner and DD much more important than
HMO. I would never give them up for HMO.

As a long time owner of a Series 1 SA unit (Philips upgraded to ~180
hours), when it was time to purchase a new Series 2 unit, I was crushed
when I found out that the new DirecTivo's didn't support HMO.
That being said, I thought long and hard about the pro's and con's of HMO
versus the DirecTivo unit's superior video quality (NO record quality
settings!), the tight integration of the TiVo and DirecTV receiver
functionality, and the dual tuners.
Never having had the HMO option, I certainly would not miss it, plus my
current Series 1 system couldn't participate anyway (and, having purchased
the lifetime service on that system, I was certainly going to continue to
use it!). Local channels for my area (Madison, WI) are coming this year,
so I wouldn't need the encoder functionality either. The
subscription price is alot cheaper for the DirecTivo units as well
(heck, I could get it for free with the higher end DirecTV programming
package). Unit price was another consideration. However, both the Hughes
HDVR2 and the new TiVo Series 2 unit could be had for $199 (total shipped
cost), so that was a wash.
I finally decided on the HDVR2. And I can tell you this, I couldn't be
happier. The tight integration with DTV functionality is GREAT. I LOVE
being able to switch the guide "styles" between TiVo and DTV. And
actually having the PPV offerings labelled properly and having the option
to record them right when I purchase them is GREAT! And the dual tuners??
Let's just say that I no longer have a problem with conflicting Season
Passes (and being able to watch programming with full TiVo functionality
while something else is being recorded is GREAT!)...
Will be upgrading my HDVR2 with two 120GB hard drives sometime early next
week (as soon as the UPS guy decides to deliver them). Plan on putting my
Series 1 system up in the bedroom (with my original DTV receiver).
