View Full Version : Escaping Digital Cable Hell!

O Great TiVo Gurus, I Beg of Thee Your Wisdom...

Does my TiVo box have a built-in ANALOG cable tuner? I have a Tivo
Series2 DVR (TCD40080), and I want to downgrade from digital cable to
out-of-the-wall, no-cable-box cable. (One month with TiVo showed me I
don't really need _anything_ on digital cable that doesn't already
come with basic service.)

The instructions and the TiVo online FAQ show me how to connect the
TiVo straight to the wall, but not how to configure it. And all the
searches of this great USENET group have so far turned up only
questions about whether TiVo has a digital tuner (which I know it
doesn't, without DirecTV and ReplayTV).

My problem is this: Going to TiVo DVR Setup > Cable/Satellite Box >
Cable Channel Changing gives me only two options: IR Cable and Serial
Cable. This implies that I have a separate cable box. Where's the
option for "None (Use TiVo's Tuner")?

Do I need to run Guided Setup from scratch, or am I out of luck given
my model?

Verily, In Advance I Thank Ye,

Ryan

Yes, re-do the Guided Setup. That's where you can select
"Cable without a Box". (You won't lose any recordings.)

Yes...that's how I had my TiVo hooked up until I switched to digital cable
(there are channels I want that are only on digital cable). Plug the cable
straight into the tuner and set up your TiVo for "cable without a cable box"
(or whatever they call it).

Mahalo, Joe and Scott! It was, indeed, re-doing the "Guided Setup."
I was just a bit nervous about venturing back there considering all
the care that had gone into perfecting my Season Passes and my
precious collection of "Aqua Teen Hungerforce."

But I did it, and sure enough, I was able to tell it "No cable box,"
it did it's download-and-process thing, and all was back to normal by
the time I got home from the beach.

I would check your season passes. While they did not get deleted they
may not work. They may look for HBO(501) instead of HBO(89)

The number being the channel. I am not 100% sure on this but, I seem
remeber a few threads about cable companies changing their lineup
(moving channels around) and season passes not working.

Hope I am wrong though.
