where does tivo get the info for programming...........? from the direct TV
or from the phone line? The reason I ask is that some people are selling
them on Ebay and saying that they have a lifetime subscription and no
phoneline is needed.

A DirecTiVo with the latest version of the software (3.1) will work
without a phone line, but you won't be able to order PPV via the unit
after a ceartain point. And after 28 days, iirc, it'll start nagging
you to connect the phone line every so often, but it'll still
function.

A DirecTiVo still running 2.5 will stop functioning as a DVR after 28
days without a phone line connected.
