Sad news and the hedge by Bill Wright[_3_]
We had a good happy seven years during which Hil recovered from the series of cardiac arrests and the stroke. This year looked promising. Hil bought me a tractor from my birthday and we had a lot of fun doing it up and mucking about with it. We started to plan our holidays, and in late March we...

UHF home distribution and witchcraft by Bob Latham
Logic and the breaking down of problems, fault finding etc. and writing code has been the one thing in my life where even I, the pessimist and self critic realised I was pretty good compared to others. That is until I start looking at issues in a UHF distribution system. It is as though the logic...

Nothing worth bothering about on tv by Brian Gaff
I just realised its been over a month since I even bothered to listen to tv, despite reading the listings of the terrestrial channels, its all rubbish, well to me it is. Have I changed or is it that I'm getting a life? Brian -- ----- -- This newsgroup posting comes to you directly...

Copper clad steel core in coax by Andrew[_6_]
I was in Wilco yesterday and noticed their coax was 40p per metre so I snipped a couple of inches off for a closer look. It seems to have an aluminium foil shield and then some more aluminium braiding, but the core is strongly attracted to a magnet. It looks like copper but scraping away reveals...

VM Tivo and UHD by David[_20_]
We now have a UHD TV and the VM Tivo should offer UHD connections, but it doesn't seem to detect the UHD capabilities. Is this likely to be the HDMI cable (pre-UHD) or just the Tivo being picky? It also has problems configuring the Ethernet port for some reason but WiFi is fine. Cheers

attachment of cable in aerials of the past. by Brian Gaff
I am getting rid of some of my old aerials that are festering away in a shed. I kept them when I had to remove them from the chimney due to work on said stack and most were not used any more in any case. Obviously they still had bits of cable attached. Looking inside the termination I...

How many onnections do streaming services allow? by Brian Gaff
It does seem to me that as video and audio over the web in real time takes off, that the growth of servers to allow a lot of people to use them at once is going to cost a lot of money. So do the bbc control numbers or is it big data servers belonging to third parties. Was there not a way of...

Is Sky always going to be in the sky? by Brian Gaff
I as as it seems to me that as the internet gets more and more integrated into life, that deliving content on a sat. which will wear out and cannot be serviced on orbit is a bit redundant. Brian -- ----- -- This newsgroup posting comes to you directly from... The Sofa of Brian...

Why do people buy 2nd hand Sky boxes? by Lucky13[_2_]
I've had a Sky+ HD box passed on to me and I was wondering why people buy them on eBay? If you want the + bit you need to subscribe. If you want the HD bit you need to subscribe. If you want Freesat then you need a Freesat box. If you want free sat from Sky then you need to enjoy scrolling...

1080i vs 1080p by Scott[_4_]
Why is the football being shown in 1080i? I thought 1080p was more suited to movement and 1080i to scenery. No witty comments about women's football please !!!

Unseemly truncation of Gentleman Jack by Bill Wright[_3_]
What's going on? It started late and finished late. Even with five minutes' padding I lost the climax (in several senses as it happens) so I had to fart about with iPlayer to avoid disappointment. Why do they do this sort of thing? Why were they running late? Why doesn't the EPG get altered?...

Derating factor..... by [email protected]
I have been reading today about derating factors for UHF amplifiers. Apparently the amplifier gain or the input signal level must be turned down as a function of the number of channels processed.... I had understood that the "gain control" is simply an attenuator after an amp that has fixed...

Looks like I managed to find the cause of 4g getting into the Ch 62and Ch 64 modulators.... by [email protected]
I have a bank of ten analogue modulators so that all of the CCTV cameras are viewable on all TV sets in the house. All this is combined with Freeview, Freesat, dab and fm. For sometime I had been plagued with tyre track interference of digital origin on Ch 62 and 64 regular as clockwork every late...

Loss of signal by Peter Johnson[_6_]
I've been experiencing brief loss of signal on my TV recently. It doesn't appear to be weather/strong wind related so I don't think there are any broken connections, but I could be mistaken about that. I was wondering if the issue could be related to deterioration of the mast-head amplifier, if...
