I would like to buy a DirecTV R10 receiver (TiVo) for use in my home
country in South America (I have DTV here). I know that the TiVo funtionality will not work here, but I would like to get rid of my VCR. I know that DirecTV match the receiver ID/Serial number/whatever to the SmartCard ID in order to activate the system. I would like to know what exactly do DirecTV to activate it, and if, in the US systems, the SmartCard and the receiver have the same identification. Any useful aditional information will be welcomed, highly appreciated. |

If yoiu mean you have SirecTV when you say "DTV", then I see no reason why a direcTV R10 wouldn't work fine, with all functionality. Just call DirecTV customer service, ask for Tech support and explain what you want and ask how to make it work. The card and receiver do not have the same number... in fact, if you sell your DirecTV Tivo, the buyer will generally be asked to purchase a new card for it. I believe there's nothing "technical" that requires a new card, just DirecTV's way of getting another $20. When I got my new HR20 DVR I deactiviated an old DirecTV Tivo. I gave them the number from the card and the number on the unit, but I'm sure their records already had both numbers since I had to give them the numbers when I originally activated the DirecTV Tivo. I know DirecTV will work flawless in my country, but it seems that they don't want to "authorize" the operation of equipment they didn't sell; that's why I'm trying to build my case against their decision. |

Put the card in the new box and phone DTV's extension 721 from the phone number of record for your system. This might enable the card to run the new receiver otherwise you just need to keep calling in until you get a CSR-Customer Service Representative that will do what you want. It's called CSR roulette for a reason. The US Directv units will not work in LAmerica-the frequency used by this
specific satellite to transmit the signal is different from that used by the US based satellite. Eventually a DVR will become available in LA. "juantxon" wrote in message oups.com... Presumably, he means the Tivo guide and automatic recording features, whereas he's hoping that manual recording will still work. I don't know if this is the case or not. |

The R10 has no tuner for OTA signal. It is nearly useless without service. Nearly because one could hack it and hook it up to a standard TiVO and use it as a server. It could make a nifty night light I suppose. -- John Duncan Yoyo ------------------------------o) Brought to you by the Binks for Senate campaign comittee.
