Setting up my new Series 2 TiVo for the first time, was a bit
disappointed to discover it didn't like a Belkin wireless adapter I had. My question is, will TiVo only support their adapters? -- It is practically impossible to teach good programming style to students that have had prior exposure to Basic; as potential programmers they are mentally mutilated beyond hope of regeneration. They do work with other adapters. The TiVo adapter however is the only one it will do WPA with. The others are limited to WEP. |

They support other adapters: http://www.tivo.com/adapters However, I wouldn't bother using anything but the TiVo adapter. It is the only one that supports WPA, and it far outperforms other adapters for transfers. -MZ -- URL:mailto:megazoneatmegazone.org Gweep, Discordian, Author, Engineer, me. My question is, will TiVo only support their adapters? If you go to tivo.com you can find a list of adapters that will work with your S2. The Tivo adapter is much faster at transferring shows from tivo2tivo, and should avoid any possible conflicts with software upgrades. They are $43 @ buy.com. |

If you're just talking about guide data and the Tivo web programming then wifi would work. But if you're talking about doing TivoToGo and other transfers of programs then wifi won't cut it. The transfer times for moving video are horrendously long over a wifi link. That and it utterly swamps any other wifi traffic going at the same time. And if you're in an area with a lot of other wifi (like a condo, dorm or apartment building) it'll get even slower. Wire is cheap and pretty easy to run. If you're planning to do program transfers don't bother wasting your money on the wifi gear. =Bill Kearney |

BK What're you expecting to do over the wireless link? Just as a faster replacement for the phone line. You guys convinced me and I ordered TiVo's adapter from Amazon. When I got a network upgrade from DVRUpgrade, they recommended using a (much simpler) WIRED adapter, and (if you still want wireless) an ethernet bridge. This separates wireless security from the TiVo itself. -- Mark Lloyd http://notstupid.laughingsquid.com "Unlike biological evolution. It's a lot more complicated (and so less reliable) and there's security. =Bill Kearney -- Mark Lloyd http://notstupid.laughingsquid.com "Unlike biological evolution. True, among all the other disadvantages of wireless. It's a lot more complicated (and so less reliable) and there's security. I don't think it is a *lot* more complicated. Certainly more complicated, since wired Ethernet requires just plugging in a cable and that's it. But WiFi isn't that hard to setup. You setup the router, which generally means just setting the network name (SSID), selecting the encryption to be used, and setting the pass-phrase. Then on the client devices you just select the correct network name and enter the pass-phrase. And reliability of modern WiFi devices is very high, and just keeps getting better with MIMO, etc. -MZ -- URL:mailto:megazoneatmegazone.org Gweep, Discordian, Author, Engineer, me.
